Cooking History Saxon-Dane Style

I am a big fan of history!  I read The Saxon Chronicles (now renamed The Last Kingdom series) by Bernard Cornwell.   I wanted to read a quality series with a female protagonist and learn more of the daily life of the Saxons (450-1066 AD. )  I found it in Octavia Randolph’s Circle of Ceridwen series.  I appreciate Randolph’s objective treatment of all the parties involved in the battle for England…the Christian Saxons and the pagan Danes.  She also included fabulous descriptions of  daily life during this period throughout her books including what Saxons and Danes ate and how they cooked. I may post some book reviews soon.

I was thrilled that Randolph published a cookbook based on the series.  I made one recipe from it (see below) called browis.   The ancient “common” dish below included pearl barley, onions, carrots, herbs and pork.  It was delicious!
