Want a way to give a Valentine gift to grown ups and teens that is thoughtful, pampering, and oh so easy to make? Try some DIY shower melts made from baking soda, water, and a few drops of an exquisite essential oil. To use, place an essential oil-infused melt in the corner of the shower stall and away from the main stream of water. The heart-shaped melt will release its powerful and invigorating aromatherapy as the steam causes it to slowly disintegrate. Although the melt will be soon gone, the essential oil molecules will linger much longer in the shower. Enjoy!
Recipe:
Ingredients
- For every cup of baking soda use 1/3 cup of water.
- Good quality essential oils*
- Optional: For Valentine gifts, I do use a bit of Wilton's food colorant in antique Willow Green and Rose Petal Red along with Yellow. These colors are similar to the coloring of the traditional heart candy that is traded by elementary students everywhere!
- The silicone baking mold below was obtained at Walmart for $3.97.
- I gratefully acknowledge Chloe Hopkins for this wonderful idea!

Instructions
- Mix the amount of baking soda and water you desire. (To fill up the entire silicone mold you will need 2 1/4 cups of baking soda and 2/3 c. water plus 1/8 c. more.)
- Add colorant if desired. I added Wilton colorant to the water first, and then poured it through a strainer into the baking soda to strain out any globs. (Wilton is a thick gel.)
- Carefully press and smooth into silicone baking molds and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
- When mostly cooled, carefully turn the mold over and gently coax each melt out of the mold.
- Add your favorite essential oil to the back of the melt. I use at least four drops per melt and often up to 6 or 7 drops. NOTE: I would not add oils to the melts for storage. Instead, keep unscented melts in a jar and on the way to the shower, select a melt in the color of your choice, and select the type of oil you wish to use at that moment and apply as per instructions.
- Place in a decorative glass container with lid.
