Get Some Sleep!

Let me ask you a question.  What would your day be like tomorrow if tonight you got 7 or 8 hours of solid, deep sleep?  Ummhmm.  You could conquer the world.

It’s easier said than done.  I know.  As a teacher, there are a million things to do at school.  There are obligations from administration for trainings and submitting reports.  Getting the room set up in time for the first day is often a challenge, especially if you are a new teacher or if you were required to change classrooms.  Let’s not even mention lesson planning and getting roster names on everything!  You may even have a family at home that strangely, likes to eat dinner.   Your children may need supplies and other items for their own school.

Finally, you are ready for bed, but now that the household is quiet…it seems like a good time to read a book, scroll through the instragram feed, research a topic that’s been on your mind or start to write notes on project that is around the bend.  You deserve some quiet time for yourself.

Should you do it?  I think you know the answer.  Sleep is so important to tomorrow’s mental functioning, your health and your emotional well-being.  You have to decide to give it a higher priority.  It’s a choice.  Here are some tips to consider for getting deeper and more restful sleep.

  1. Make a decision to feel GREAT tomorrow by going to sleep at a certain time.
  2. If you are sensitive to caffeine, stop drinking coffee or tea by at least noon.
  3. Spend time on the weekend to plan and prepare your clothes, your lunches  and your dinners for the week.  This saves time in the evening.
  4. Diffuse or use a nighttime sleep recipe roller with quality essential oils.  If you tend to have trouble sleeping, you will need more than just lavender essential oil.  If you tend to fall asleep quickly, a lavender pillow spray may be all you need.
  5. Keep a prayer journal and spend time in prayer before bed, giving all your concerns and problems to the Lord.  If racing thoughts about your problems persist,  make a little prayer box or grab a lidded jar.  Write your prayer requests on a strip of paper, fold it up and put it in your prayer box, resting secure that while you are sleeping, God is working on it.
  6. Keep a little notepad and pen on your night table.  If something important comes to your mind that you don’t want to forget, write it down so it won’t keep you up.
  7. Keep an index card flip book on your nightstand with 10-20 promises of God and encouraging quotes.  If you get an attack of fear regarding something, go to your flip book and read your verses and your wise quotes.
  8. Try playing soft, soothing instrumental music as you drift off to sleep.  Recently, I have been enjoying playing Wholetones music at the 396mhz.  It puts me out like a light!  I think the 396 mhz would be best for sleep.
  9. Use a sleep patch that has time-released magnesium to help you naturally drift off to sleep.
  10. If you love to read or scroll the feeds at night, do it an hour before bedtime and love yourself enough to stick to your cut off time.  You will thank yourself in the morning!
